This gorgeous painted vanity made by the McLagan Furniture Company in Stratford Ontario. I understand that at one time Stratford was the largest producer of fine furniture in Canada. This painted vanity was purchased from a couple in Fort Erie on Lindbergh Street that had the cutest little dogs in the world…. they were a mix of Maltese and some kind of terrier I believe and both had what appeared to be “highlights” in their hair. One dog was a red and the other a dirty blonde…. just adorable.
This piece is a monster. It had a dark reddish brown mahogany colour. My goal was to achieve the complete opposite, a classic and bright look to give it a light feel. I first started with my go-to colour of “Old White” by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I then painted the door fronts in a mixture of ASCP 2/3 Old White and 1/3 Coco. I distressed quite considerably and then added a good coat of clear wax for durability and a bit of a sheen to the paint.
For the lovely painted vanity top surface, I stripped and sanded then added two coats of the best Gel Stain in the world General Finishes in the Antique Walnut colour. After letting it dry completely I added 2 coats of the GF High-performance top coat in flat. Gorgeous!!
The hardware was cleaned in a diluted vinegar solution and replaced on the painted vanity as a finishing touch. This has to be one of my all time favourite pieces that I’ve done thus far.
This painted vanity measures: 48”w x 19 ½”D x 32” H (to the top of the crown on the desk). And the mirror measures: 31″w x 41″L
