Kelly and her husband Brent wanted to see this painted old white chest converted to their children’s toy box and it certainly needed a bit of a facelift.
I started by adding a set of lovely bun feet to the piece that I purchased from Lowe’s to lift the cabinet off the floor. This is so easy to do. First I measured the diameter of the feet then halfed the measurement. I measured these feet to be 9 cms in diameter. So anything over 4.5 cms from the edge of the cabinet both in the front and in the back was going to work. This gave me an idea of where to centre and mount the brackets for the feet and to ensure that they were NOT going to “stick out” beyond the bottom plate.
The bracing under the cabinet wasn’t sufficient to mount the bracket so I had to build up those areas beneath to ensure I had something to screw into. I did this with glue and shimes I had around. Once the glue had set up I predrilled all my holes and attached the brackets with the screws provided. And all there was next to do was simply screw in the feet!! And presto …. they are done!!
Now… going back to the design or look of the chest ….I chose this style of foot because I loved the way the lined curves of the feet mimic the lines in the rest of the old white pine chest. These feet will make it much easier to move the toybox around on the hardwood floors.
I then painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White, distressed and applied a NO VOC oil base (soy that is) topcoat by Artisan Enhancements over the entire surface. Kelly wanted to add a bit more interest so I picked up some wonderful hardware from Lee Valley Tools including some handles, latches and straps to make it look extra special.
This will be used as a toybox for their kids. I hope you all enjoy it for many years to come Kelly and Brent!!
