Maple for me is always a bit of a refinishing nightmare and this painted maple desk was no exception. My original plan was to refinish the top and paint the rest of the cabinet but the maple, because it is so dense, isn’t very favourable to stain. After fussing with the top I decided to abandon that idea and just paint the whole piece. I’m so glad I did because it really turned out wonderfully!
Before I get to the painting, I just wanted to mention that this piece was picked up in Grimsby, Ontario on Aspen Street from a very opinionated and bossy lady. First off she had a lovely husband whom she ordered around like he was her own personal slave, the poor old guy could barely walk. He was a happy fella, though. Between you and me, I think he was half in the bag! Don’t blame him one bit!
Now back to our great painted maple desk. I chose a custom mixture of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Equal parts of Duck Egg Blue and Chateau Grey. After two coats of paint, I distressed and applied General Finishes Water Based High-Performance Topcoat. I know this piece will more than likely sit in a child’s room and will get lots of wear and tear so I chose this option instead of the typical wax option I usually use.
The hardware received both a spray of Copper and Oil Rubbed Bronze by Rustoleum. The perfect combination for this lovely minty/pastel green colour.

I heart this color!! It’s so fresh and current, but neutral at the same time. You always do amazing things with the most sad pieces. Love coming to your blog. Thanks so much for sharing with us at Friday’s Furniture Fix. Susie from The Chelsea Project

Its adorable! I have something of a similar nature (although the top is dark brown) and I use mine as a vanity in my bedroom. Pair it with a cute little stool, a small stand mirror on top and there ya go!
