This lovely painted Malcolm sofa table desk is a mahogany piece that I picked up on the Niagara “Parkway”. The Parkway runs along the Niagara River from Niagara-on-the-Lake through Niagara Falls and on to Fort Erie in the south. If you ever get a chance to visit Niagara Falls and need a change of scenery (ie. the Falls) rent a car or even a bicycle and pack a small lunch and work your way along the water for some great views and lovely parks along the way.
Malcolm Fine Furniture of Listowel, Ontario is the manufacturer of this classic Duncan Phyfe style table/desk. I first stained the top of the table with General Finishes Gel Stain in a combination of Java and Antique Walnut. After drying well I applied a couple of coats of General Finishes High Performance Waterbased Topcoat. I just love working with mahogany. It strips down really well and takes the stain very very well.
The colour that I chose is this regal blue by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, a custom colour of Aubusson Blue and Graphite. It was then waxed with Annie Sloan Soft Clear Wax for protection and additional durability. The hardware was also changed up to these classic round ceramic knobs that match the paint colour almost perfectly!
I’ve also painted the back of this table so it could easily be used as a sofa table as well. I’m going to see if I can find a Duncan Phyfe chair with a Lyre back to pair with it for a classic duo.
