I’ve only ever really done one other mid-century modern dresser and it was in black. I knew this one was going to be white. Last fall my husband and I picked up this dresser and night stand from a farm in Fisherville, ON. It’s a very sturdy maple set made by Vilas Furniture Co. of Quebec.
I purchased this mid-century modern dresser set online at auction. We have a few online auctioneers in Southern Ontario and I just love perusing through the items at my leisure and placing my maximum amount that I’m willing to purchase it for, leave it and hope I win. I have to admit if it’s something that I want I plan to log in and be present as the auction is closing and bid against others live.
It really is a rush …. just like your traditional face to face auctions but not as fast. If you haven’t checked them out you really should. There is no harm in seeing what items will go for at the end of the day.
Anyhow, back to my auction finds, these pieces received the Antique White Milk Paint treatment by General Finishes. I had used the lamp black before on many occasions but this was my first time using Antique White. I rolled on three coats to all surfaces except the drawer fronts. And over the milk paint, I applied the General Finishes High-Performance topcoat. I just love how these two products work together. If you are looking for a really smooth finish, like the one here that I wanted to accomplish, GF Milk Paint and HPTC is your best bet.
The fronts of the drawers were cleaned with the General Finishes recommended denatured alcohol/water solution and then one coat of the combination Java and Antique Walnut Gel Stain was applied to darken the surfaces.
Just love the way they turned out!
The dresser measures: 34″W x 18 1/2″D x 38 1/2″H SOLD
The nightstand measures: 18″W x 16″D x 25 1/2″H $325

These turned out so lovely! Well done! The drawer fronts are really cool and I love that you left them in the wood tone for contrast! I have never tried the online auctions before. I may have to look into that! Congratulations on co-hosting wonderful Wednesdays! I will have to check it out! I hope you have a great week!

Thanks Terry!! I wasn’t sure how they were going to turn out…I’ve been meaning to try a sprayer but have been too chicken to get one (need to do a lot more research). But the GF with the roller worked great!
Thanks on the congrats on the WW! I only just committed to it… can I ask how you found out? I’m really nervous about it! I think I should have got some pointers from someone like you that hosts a linky party before I commit to these things! Crazy!!

I Found out about the co-hosting because I’m a “comment reader” and I read it on the comments on your blog post for these pieces you shared. I think you will do great hosting, don’t be afraid, it isn’t as intimidating as you think! It is just time consuming but so worth it! I wish you well, you will be fabulous at hosting I’m sure! I hope you have a great week!
