This lovely painted glazed buffet was picked up in Hamilton on Glendee Court, not too far from where I grew up in East Hamilton. I’ve always loved this small enclave of homes between King and Lawrence Road. Unique stone was used to brick the homes in this area and even though they all look similar they all are somehow different. The young woman that sold us this painted glazed buffet along with a hutch, table and four chairs was updating her home that had been sold to her by her parents, and her parents had purchased the home from her grandparents. This furniture had been passed down from her grandparents and hadn’t left this house until we took it out.
This wonderful painted glazed buffet measures 50”W x 18”D x 38 ½”H and has great proportions. A sticker on the back indicates that it was made by the Harris Furniture and Chair Company in Owen Sound, Ontario.
It has been refinished in my absolute favourite General Finishes Gel Stain in the Antique Walnut Colour to go over the wonder black walnut. I then painted the buffet in a custom colour of Annie Sloan Chalk paint mixture 1/3 Coco and 2/3 Old White. I then did something I typically wouldn’t do. I top coated the paint and top with General Finishes High-Performance Top Coat in Flat. After it dried I mixed the Gel Stain with 10% Mineral Spirits and glazed the piece. This definitely gave the painted glazed buffet a wonderful depth and patina.
This piece would look wonderful in almost any room of your house. Add a mirror to the top and presto you have a great look in your front hall, dining room or as a great media centre in your living room.
