I’ve been using this Grey Painted Jacobean Buffet in its before state in the studio as a place to finish some of my smaller pieces over the last few months. My husband and I purchased this buffet in north St. Catharines on “Lake” Street.
A lovely lady with her two young boys was clearing out her parents’ apartment and selling off this piece and many more she had available. She also had a matching hutch but I opted not to take it. My studio was really full at the time and I couldn’t, unfortunately, take it also.
I wanted to create an almost “dipped” look for this piece so I simply left the legs unpainted and when I refinished the top I touched up the legs in spots that had some knicks in them.
The body of the cabinet was finished in my go to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I hadn’t used the Chateau Grey colour in a long time and thought this piece would lend itself well for this shabby chic distressed (almost chippy look). After the second coat, I waited for a little bit and began to wet distress all the edges of the pieces, quite heavily I might add. After I was finished with that I added a good coat of the ASCP Clear Soft Wax.
The top surface of this piece was chemically stripped, sanded and stained with General Finishes Java Gel Stain. Similarly to the colour, I had not used Java in awhile but so love how it always turns out. After three coats of the stain, I finished the piece with two coats of the General Finishes Gel Topcoat.
The hardware was cleaned and rehung in it’s original tarnished brass colour.
The Grey Jacobean buffet would look so fantastic in a farmhouse country shabby interior decor with plenty of storage in the open cabinet cupboards on either end and two good sized drawers in the middle.
Measurements: 66″W x 22″D x 38″H (+ 5 1/2″ backboard)

This piece is stunning. I love the color combination you chose and how you didn’t clean up the hardware to a perfect shine. The little bit of tarnish adds to the charm.

Thank you Debra!! I haven’t used this colour in awhile …. it has a lovely greenish tinge to it giving it that farmhouse appeal!
Thanks for stopping by!

I had a buffet similar to yours that I wish I had kept. They are so hard to come by. Love the stain and paint combination that you chose. So elegant! Would love it if you would consider sharing at Friday’s Furniture Fix! ;o) http://www.patinaparadise.com/2016/02/fridays-furniture-fix-26.html

Thanks Lucy!! I too just love these buffets. It must be in the area you live in that there is a lack of these kinds of buffets. They are very abundant in southern Ontario but I know that I have a very hard time finding the empire style of dressers/buffets in my area where they are very prominent in parts of the US. I have shared this piece on Furniture Fix Fridays! Have a great weekend!!

This looks beautiful. I do like the dipped look you created by leaving the legs natural. It’s so sophisticated looking. Great job.
