Many of you that know me, know that I just love the french provincial painted dresser style. This one is special, it is stamped Andrew Malcolm probably made in the 50’s or 60’s, with lovely details including a triple scalloped reverse edge on top and what’s known as a double stacked dresser. The hardware is oh so pretty with the handles and faux escutcheons.
I picked this lovely up on Stoney Creek mountain just off of Mud Street from a lovely young mom named “Danielle”. She said she had purchased it many years ago from a local Antique Shop and had it in her guest room now turned into a nursery for her newborn baby.
I began by stripping the top surface with my chemical stripper and just as I thought there was a lovely maple veneered surface beneath the stain and white paint. The next step involved cleaning all the surfaces really well with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) that takes years of grease and grime and essentially deglosses the surfaces. The first colour that I used, similar to the Rhonda End Table, is a mixture of colour by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint that I had in my studio. I just love how the blue/gray colour looked on the end table that I thought this would be a great base for the dresser.
I wanted to achieve a layered effect with a second colour. I chose Florence, again by Annie Sloan to apply a coloured wax finish. So I took about 2 teaspoonsful of clear soft wax and added about a teaspoonful of the Florence colour and incorporated the two on a piece of cardboard. I was quite hopeful at the beginning but as soon as I started to apply the coloured wax effect was far too subtle for my liking.
So onto “Plan B”, a “colourwash” of the Florence to the newly waxed surface. I mixed 1 part Florence to 1 part water, brushing it onto the surface and whipping off with a paper towel to achieve this lovely green teal layered colour. Perfect!!
I then went back to the top surface where I “whitewashed” the lovely maple veneer. I wanted it to contrast the rest of the cabinet yet see the grain in the wood. I then sealed the top with General Finishes High-Performance Waterbased topcoat.
I wanted to leave the hardware white to give the piece an additional pop of interest. I cleaned the handles and escutcheons, rehung them and applied gold gilding to all the raised areas including all the stepped details of the cabinet.
This piece is large and very heavy but I just love the way it turned out!!! These are definitely my kind of colours!!
This piece measures: 37″W x 21″D x 53″H
