This classic Duncan Phyfe painted buffet made by the Knechtel Woodhouse Furniture, was found in the north end of Niagara Falls that I had never been to before. It was on “Mountain” Road by a lovely lady named Jean who has a fruit stand out front of her home. It was in pretty rough shape when I got it …. I had to do some minor repairs to the bottom and some pretty heavy duty stripping and sanding to achieve this great finish.
I first did the repairs and then started with the top. I stripped, sanded and gel stained the top surface with General Finishes Java Gel Stain. I did three coats to achieve this deep brown colour. After all coats were dried well I applied two coats of Minwax Wipe On Polyurethane.
The rest of the cabinet received a few coats, three to be exact, of my favourite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Country Grey. These cabinets are so heavy and sturdy made of mahogany.
After the paint dried I subtly distressed all the edges on the Duncan Phyfe painted buffet. Once all the dust was removed I clear waxed and buffed the painted areas with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Clear Soft Wax. The hardware was cleaned and sprayed with Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze.
This is a wonderful compliment to the vintage painted “Crystal” Dining Set. It could also be used as a TV console, front hall table or of course a great buffet in your dining room.
It measures: 48″W x 18 1/2″D x 35″ H.
