This very well built mahogany painted double decker end table was a roadside rescue on “Lincoln” Street in Welland, Ontario. It had a sibling but was too far gone and unfortunately this piece had to make the journey to my studio all on it’s own. It didn’t have any obvious marking of where it came from but if I was to guess it was either a Deilcraft or Andrew Malcolm end table from the 50’s or 60’s.
After cleaning it down well I applied a coat of shellac as the surface was not sealed in places and I knew because I wanted to finish it in white it would bleed through. That darned mahogany is a bleeder!!
The shellac typically takes no time at all to dry so I applied my go to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. And success- no bleed through. If you plan ahead and know what to expect it makes things much more pleasant and a pleasure to do later.
I slightly distressed the edges with 200 grit sandpaper and applied Annie Sloan Soft Clear Wax for protection, durability and a lovely sheen.
This piece would look great in the living/family room or even as a night stand in your mid century modern bedroom.
It measures: 16″W x 26″D x 26″H
