As promised in my previous post the classic painted Duncan Phyfe dining suite reveal is here!! I’ve been busy the last couple of weeks working at my client Stacey’s beautiful dining room in Port Dalhousie. I started with the buffet, table apron, legs and chairs including the recovering of the seats. I then attacked the glass hutch.
As all good paint jobs, preparation is definitely not fun but certainly necessary. As the dining chairs in the previous post I used General Finishes recommended 1:1 denatured alcohol and water solution with a very fine sanding sponge to “clean” the surfaces for better adhesion.
After cleaning off all the surfaces with a damp cloth I began painting with General Finishes Lamp Black. This paint really is luxurious. I’ve said this before, it goes on like latex wall paint, so velvety. After all surfaces were dry I lightly distressed all of those lovely curved edges with a 100 grit sand paper.
The last step involves my new favourite NO VOC soy based oil topcoat by Artisan Enhancements Topcoat. It goes on milky, is self leveling and dries crystal clear. I just love working with it. And it will go over almost anything, even wax!!!!
I have to also mention the “jewelery” or hardware for this amazing suite. The original brass hardware was dark and tarnished and with a little bit of elbow grease (boiling with vinegar and water, sand, repeat) was oh so worth it! The brass hardware turned out magnificently!!!
It has been a pleasure to work with you Stacey. Your home and decorating style is superb!!
Please let us know if you are interested in having your dining room suite transformed into something a little prettier than it is.
