This lovely antique cedar hope chest was found in Oakville on “Summer” Heights Trail. A lovely lady named Kim was moving and selling off some items she had inherited from her mother’s home. I really do love these chests and they are harder and harder to find these days.
The date stamped on the opening mechanism for the lid says 1926 which makes this ‘almost’ an antique. It was in its original condition of dark walnut veneers, very clean cedar interior cavity and the wooden casters are all still intact. The top was stripped sanded and a couple of coats of my favourite General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain was added. The rest of the cabinet received a custom combination of Old Ochre and Duck Egg Blue (3:1) Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
My favourite finish, of course, is the light distressing with 220 grit sand paper in areas to highlight all the lovely details of this Jacobean piece and then Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax buffed to a lovely sheen.
It measures: 45″W x 19 1/2″D x 23″H
This piece would look great at the foot of a bed, in a toy room or as a coffee table in your sitting room and of course, provide much storage in any one of those areas.
Pin this for later:

Visiting from the Friday Furniture Fix link party. I actually have a very similar cedar chest I’m working on now and looking for color inspiration. The off-white looks great on this one.

This is one of the prettiest coffee table makeovers I’ve seen in a while. Love the bones of the piece….and the two tone color…Perfection. Thanks so much for linking to Friday’s Furniture Fix. We love having you here. XOXO Susie

OK.. I’m having a senior moment. I called this a coffee table. I was thinking as I wrote the post….Wonder if that chest is low enough to be a coffee table? Anyway, #havemercy 🙁 #dontlaugh #mybad

Not a problem Susie… infact I think I listed as a coffee table. I painted the back of it so it can be used as a coffee table. Have a great day!!
