I just love roundups and I thought I would put together a list of 10 Fabulous Painted Furniture Pieces that could be turned into bathroom vanities. How many of you out there have or would use a vintage/antique piece of painted furniture to create a one of a kind bathroom vanity?
I certainly would have retrofitted one of these fabulous pieces to use in one of our baths, had we not renovated before I fell in love with furniture painting!! That being said, I’ve had many clients over the years purchase pieces that have been turned into bathroom vanities. I can think of two right off the top. This lovely dresser that I named “Keaton” was purchased by a couple that was renovating their basement and putting in a powder room. They were planning on putting a vessel sink and using epoxy on the surface to make it almost waterproof.
The other piece I was thinking of was the “Orchard” Buffet that was purchased by a mom of three boys. She and her husband were renovating the main bath which was going to be shared by the boys. They were planning on cutting the legs down because the buffet was a bit high to be a bathroom vanity. But she knew with the growing boys she would need something on the taller side, besides was going to drop in a ceramic sink to make it level with the top surface. Very cool.
Here is my roundup of really great pieces!
Painted Furniture – Duncan Phyfe Dressers & Buffet Sideboards
These classic mahogany pieces are sturdy and have so much storage whether they are small or large. I’ve done all different kinds of painted furniture pieces in all different colours. I prefer to finish the top surfaces with General Finishes Gel Stain both Java Gel Stain and my other favourite Antique Walnut Gel Stain. Now, I also almost always use an oil-based polyurethane for the top coat finish for added protection and durability.
The first is a piece that I named “Lord Simcoe” that I finished some years ago. Although the lady that purchased it used it as a buffet this beauty would look stunning in a master bathroom.
My “Jennifer” dresser is another special piece that I still have in my office. This painted furniture cabinet with refinished General Finishes Java Gel Stain on the top surface would look fantastic as a double vanity in any bathroom.
“Cheryl” is one of my most favourite painted dressers. I just swoon over the demilune shape, coastal whitewash look on all the panels and drawer fronts. And that tell-tale Hepplewhite oval drawer pulls that are synonymous with the Duncan Phyfe style. This piece would fit perfectly into a narrow space as it’s not very deep nor does it have sharp corners.
Painted Furniture – French Provincial Dressers and Buffet Sideboards
These pieces are really dreamy and romantic. The classic scalloped feet and shapely drawers and edges. Imagine a lovely slab of Carrera marble or quartz on top with an ornate gold gilded mirror.
The “Kew” Buffet is a smaller piece that would make a statement in a larger powder room paired with silver/chrome accents and perhaps a really cool metallic wallpaper. I just love this perfect turquoise colour made with equal parts of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Florence and Provence.
“Esther” is a special piece that received layers and layers of beautiful Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Aubusson Blue, Old White and Duck Egg Blue. It was further embellished with gold gilding.
“Edward” is technically a Queen Anne Style Buffet with those classic long and not so ornate legs. He was painted Lamp Black by General Finishes and gold gilded for that pop of interest.
Painted Furniture – Jacobean Style Dressers & Buffet Sideboards
This Jacobean painted buffet that I recently finished for a client “Melissa” would make a stylin’ farmhouse vanity with tons of storage on the bottom. With a coat of epoxy, the top surface would be waterproof and absolutely gorgeous in a master bedroom ensuite as a double vanity.
“Crystal” was a super cute black walnut piece that would fit the bill for any bath as a single vanity. It would look brilliant with a slab of marble but I would be very hesitant to cover up that gorgeous walnut on top!
Painted Vanity and Mirror found on “Lindbergh””LIndbergh” is a beautiful mahogany desk and mirror duo that is the perfect combination for vanity perfection. Refinished with Antique Walnut Gel Stain and Gel topcoat to finish along with a Duo Colour scheme on the painted desk parts. The main body painted in Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint and the drawers painted in Annie Sloan Coco Chalk Paint. A little distressing for patina and some Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax to finish.
Painted Furniture – Art Deco Mid Century Buffet Sideboards
The last, but certainly not least piece I want to share in the roundup is the lovely Art Deco classic buffet/sideboard. “Parkdale” was a piece that was in my dining room for years until it got an update. I finished the body of the cabinet with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in a colour called graphite and used dark wax to give it that dark patina as well as protection and durability. The top was finished with Minwax deep penetrating stain along with wipe-on polyurethane for protection and durability.
